Overwhelming Public Opinion Supports Banning of Dog Meat in Korea

Today the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of Korea’s National Assembly will deliberate a special law to prohibit activities relating to the eating of dogs. Mainstream media such as Chosun Ilbo and Hankook Ilbo today have widely reported on results of an opinion survey conducted by an authoritative research body, which are listed as follows:

  1. 94.5% of respondents have not eaten dog meat in the past year and 93.4% have no intention to do so in the future.
  2. When asked why it is that they do not eat dog meat, the most common answer (cited by 53.5% respondents) was “I feel an emotional strain about it”
  3. Regarding legislating to ban the raising, butchering and selling of dogs for meat, those who support a law to ban such activities reached 82.3%

Compared with 2022’s survey, those who do not wish to eat dog meat have increased by 4.8%, while those who support legislating to ban the raising, butchering and selling of dogs for meat have increased 9.5%.
