Banning the Consumption of Dogs and Cats in Japan

The Cross-party Animal Welfare Congressional Alliance’s Working Team on banning the Consumption of Dogs and Cats was launched, and a wide range of discussions were held by Councilor Kusuo Oshima and the House of Councilors, including ideas and concrete ways to legislate a ban on the consumption of dogs and cats.

The World Dog Alliance (WDA) is very pleased and sincerely welcomes the request to provide information on laws and other materials related to the prohibition of consumption of dogs and cats in various countries around the world, which will contribute to the legalization of the prohibition of consumption of dogs and cats in Japan.

Money Today, an economic journal in South Korea, recently published a series on the current state of the dog meat industry in the country. And the owner of a dog meat restaurant was interviewed and said that his customers are talking about “if they don’t let me eat in Korea, I’ll go to Vietnam or Southeast Asia to eat”.  Is it the nature of humankind to have the

” greed” for food that drives us to go to other countries to eat certain things?

The WDA has been sounding the alarm that Japan is in danger of becoming a dog meat country since it began the campaign in Japan that it is legal to eat, import, cook, and sell dog and cat meat in Japan. And once it is made into meat, there is no way to know where the cat or dog came from.  Eating cats and dogs is NOT part of the Japanese food culture, it is necessary to prohibit the consumption of dogs and cats by law so we will be able to protect our precious companion animals and our own culture here.

The WDA will continue to work with Diet Members and other concerned parties who support the ban on the consumption of dogs and cats in effort to promote the legislation.
