China is widely considered the biggest dog consuming country in the world. According to estimates by various animal protection groups, China slaughters between 4 million to 20 million dogs every year.

The custom of dog eating in China can be traced back to 3000 years ago. The most active regions are Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the provinces of Yunnan, Jilin and Guizhou, which are seen as being more active than big cities. The Yulin dog meat festival of Guangxi is a controversial topic each year when it is held.

In May 2020, Shenzhen became the first Chinese city to ban the eating of dog meat.
