7/7 Taiwan Legislative Council passed first reading of “banning dog and cat meat” bill

World Dog Alliance started planning activities in Taiwan on banning dog meat consumption legislation since February 2016. The “Taiwan Hong Kong Dog Forum” was successfully hosted on 16 May, Founder Genlin gave an exposition on the importance and necessity on legislation. Outstanding achievements from the event gained the Nationalist Party and the Democratic Progressive Party’s support, speeding up the progress of “explicit legislation banning dog and cat meat consumption” in Taiwan.

On 22 April 2016, congresswoman Wang YuMin of the Nationalist Party submitted a bill to amend the Animal Protection Law, banning consumption of dog and cat meat in Taiwan. 16 congressmen/congresswomen countersigned.

On 27 May 2016, congressman Qiu ZhiWei of the Nationalist Party submitted a bill to amend the Animal Protection Law, emphasizing the necessity of banning dog and cat meat. 21 congressmen/congresswomen countersigned.

Economic Committee of the Legislative Council passed the 1st reading of the bill amending “Animal Protection Law” explicitly banning dog and cat meat consumption, offenders will be fined for 5-25 thousand TWD (160- 800 USD).
